NICU DAYS
New born:
Gross motor skills:
No controlled movement
Fine motor skills:
Grasps mommy’s hand that touches the palm of their hands.
Speech / Languages:
cries when nurses touch them
1 month:
Gross motor skills:
-No controlled movement
-focus on colors in few minutes (preemies love to sleep)
Fine motor skills:
reflexive grasping of hands
Speech / Languages:
cries when nurses touch them
Open their eyes when hears speech
2 months:
Gross motor skills:
-No controlled movement
-focus on colors in few minutes ( preemies love to sleep)
-Can turn head side to side during kangaroo care
-slightly hold their heads when pulled up to sitting
Fine motor skills:
reflexive grasping of hands
Speech / Languages:
-cries when nurses touch them
-Open their eyes when hears speech
***After NICU***
3 months: (one month in corrected age)
Gross motor skills:
-Can turn head in all directions
-Head control is greatly improved
-lifts head and chest up while lying on stomach
-thumb sucking
-Bears weight through the legs when held in standing
-Stepping movement seen when held in standing
-kick in the bath with their hands and feet.
-Uncontrolled reaching / batting at objects
Fine motor skills:
-holds a toy that is placed in their hands
-Can’t reach out and pick up a toy but they swipe at it
Speech / Languages:
-begins cooing, squealing and gurgling sounds
-Recognizes mom’s voice
-Enjoys noisy toys
-Enjoys any songs you sing
-get mad when you stop paying attention
-very excited when having fun
4 months: (Two months in corrected age)
Gross motor skills:
-able to sit propped up with pillows
-lifts head and chest up while lying on stomach
-Head is in the middle with the chin when lying on back
-head control is greatly improved
-thumb sucking
-Bears weight through the legs when held in standing
-Stepping movement seen when held in standing
-kick in the bath with their hands and feet.
Fine motor skills:
-holds a toy that is placed in their hands
-Can’t reach out and pick up a toy but they swipe at it
Speech / Languages:
-can repeat some sounds
-smile to indicate contentment
-cooing, squealing and gurgling sounds
-Recognizes mom’s voice
-Enjoys noisy toys
-Enjoys any songs you sing
-get mad when you stop paying attention
-very excited when having fun
5 months: (Three months in corrected age)
Gross motor skills:
-Bring toys to middle of their body
-Turns their head on one side when pulled to sitting
-Toes are curled when in standing
-able to sit propped up with pillows
-lifts head and chest up while lying on stomach
-head control is greatly improved
-thumb sucking
-Bears weight through the legs when held in standing
-Stepping movement seen when held in standing
-kick in the bath with their hands and feet.
Fine motor skills:
-holds a toy that is placed in their hands
-Grasp objects place infront of them
Speech / Languages:
-Laughs, coos ang gurles for attention
-Notices appliances sounds like TV and music
-Uses sounds to express emotions and wants
-can repeat some sounds
-smile to indicate contentment
-Recognizes mom’s voice
-Enjoys noisy toys
-Enjoys any songs you sing
-get mad when you stop paying attention
-very excited when having fun
6 months: (Four months in corrected age)
Gross motor skills:
-Able to stand while being held at the chest
-Bring knees to hands when lying on back
-able to sit propped up with pillows
-lifts head and chest up while lying on stomach
-head control is greatly improved
-kick and splashing in the bath with their hands and feet.
Fine motor skills:
-Uses 4 fingers and squeez to hold a toy
-Grasp objects place infront of them
-No grasping of small toys
Speech / Languages:
-They can repeat some sounds
-Laughs, coos ang gurles for attention
-Notices appliances sounds like TV and music
-Uses sounds to express emotions and wants
-smile to indicate contentment
-Recognizes mom’s voice
-Enjoys noisy toys
-Enjoys any songs you sing
-get mad when you stop paying attention
-very excited when having fun
